These 2 convertibles are for the same kind of buyer, offer similar tops, and try to offer the same level of happiness.
Whats your pick? I promise I wont feel bad :)

They made convertible PT Cruisers?!
And Somebody bought one?!
Daaaaaaaaaaaamn.

The Cabrio, times a million.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 15:53 |

Haha, and that one is a Turbo! It is actually for sale.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 15:53 |

I dislike that front plate. So I'm going PT Cruiser.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 15:54 |

The Vdub, if I had to.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 15:54 |

They both suck, but the PT cruiser has the same engine as the SRT-4, so I'm going with that.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 15:55 |

For sale ?!
Did they accept GT credits?
PT is a weird but fun car in Gran turismo.

You deserve a picture of my dog
![]() 06/18/2014 at 15:55 |

I hate both of them - the Mark 4 Golf sucks, and the PT Cruiser's a buggering PT Cruiser - so, uh, I'd say walk?
![]() 06/18/2014 at 15:55 |

This times a million
![]() 06/18/2014 at 15:56 |

I thought it looked nice *sobs
![]() 06/18/2014 at 15:56 |

well, i DO want to be Uber Cool.....
![]() 06/18/2014 at 15:56 |

I'd take the PT Cruiser. The Golf is still based on the Mk3 and just so damn boring.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 15:56 |

Danke
![]() 06/18/2014 at 15:58 |

The Turbo is the only appealing thing of it.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 15:58 |
|
Haha yep, the phone number is on the top corner. Want me to call?
![]() 06/18/2014 at 15:59 |

more happiness, however, would come from a V12 XJS. Also a lot more crying, but when you are happy, you'll be super happy in it.

In Tampico's sunlight? The second most humid city in the world? I don't think you want to.

You have won a Photo of my Über dog
![]() 06/18/2014 at 16:01 |

If you really must, then the Golf. Just don't enjoy the experience, damn you!
![]() 06/18/2014 at 16:03 |
|
You'd be surprised that it doesn't handle bad for what it is. Being a convertible also gives it a different kind of fun, I enjoy it at least
![]() 06/18/2014 at 16:07 |
|
There is no question here, VW Cabrio.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 16:07 |
|
So you bought the VW? Not bad.
Still, I'd always take the PT because it's the more interesting car if you are German like me. I literally am sick of seeing Golfs.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 16:12 |
|
Theres no other answer here. Thanks!
![]() 06/18/2014 at 16:14 |
|
Oh now I see your point. In Mexico, VW's are seen as far superior to any other Nissans, Chevrolets, Renaults whatever. And yes, I bought it in January.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 16:16 |
|
The VW, and I'm not saying that just to make you feel good. I have always found the PT Convertible a little vomit-inducing. The VW may not be my first choice in convertibles, but it's fun, and unlike the PT, it doesn't try too hard.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 16:51 |
|
I want to say PT because it's a Turbo. I can't stand how they look though so I'm going with VW.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 17:10 |
|
That is a good choice
![]() 06/18/2014 at 17:11 |
|
If they only did it with the 1.8 Turbo!
![]() 06/18/2014 at 17:12 |
|
Ehh, that 1.8T VW engine wasn't exactly an epicenter of reliability.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 17:18 |
|
I know, but when it worked, it would've been great in that car. Would you say that or the VR6 is more reliable?
![]() 06/18/2014 at 17:20 |
|
I have no idea, to be honest. I'm not a VW engine expert. So I'm going to say neither, 3800 Series II.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 21:26 |

vr6 easy. Mostly just a stupid chain to worry about.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 21:30 |

I would drive any VAG product (i like to pronounce it vaj, as in vagina) over any Chrysler (don't bring Daimler into this) product. Ever. In all of their histories. PT's are so incredibly atrocious.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 21:44 |

Don't cry that plate is uber cool.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 21:47 |

I was thinking about getting a Cabrio if the 924s guy doesn't call me back. I would take Oliver over any PT GT Convertible.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 21:48 |
|
I was thinking of getting a Cabrio. So I choose Oliver a million times.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 22:55 |

mk3.5 bitch basket ftw. I swapped a 12V VR6 into one of these over christmas break with my buddy. The VR6 growling away with the top down is probably the best noise ever
![]() 06/18/2014 at 22:57 |
|
I've driven a mk1 cabby and a mk3. Both are WAY less shit than I thought they would be. The mk3 was on it's face on coils (not my car) and didn't scuttle shake nearly as bad as a stock E36 convertible.

A **well cared for** 1.8T will give you very few problems. If you're familiar with its quirks, and treat it properly, it's fantastic. Abuse it, or neglect it, and it will be nothing but trouble.
VR6 is really a tough motor. The crack pipe (look it up on the forums, it's a plastic coolant manifold buried in the front of the engine bay near the block, always cracks and sucks to get at to replace), and the timing chains are their only real weaknesses. Chains last until ~170k (telltale rattle like marbles in a tin can which changes with RPM), and the crack pipe just breaks when you don't want it to. Replace both and it'll give no fucks for a very long time. They are big motors though, and when something does break, usually it's a whore to get to as there is not any space in the engine bay compared to the ABA 8V.
Buy a mk3 VR6 parts car and swap the motor. The hydraulic master cylinder for the clutch is a pain in the ass, but it generally fits right in. You'll want to have the whole other car for the swap though, as there are plenty of differences between a cabrio body-in-white and a mk3 Golf/ Golf GTI body-in-white. The VR6 is properly fast, and sounds AMAZING with the top down. I could seriously talk about the noise it makes all day. It's awesome. Do it.
Source: I've been a part of this build thread since page 9 or 10 of 26, done 3 engine swaps, and I own a mk4 Golf (which has been a turd lately)

Great answer!
![]() 06/18/2014 at 23:29 |

Seriously? That made me happy, I was thinking that it would be epic to have one. But the reliability was worrying for me. I don't do much driving, and I think the VR6 Golf/Jetta are so cool.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 23:30 |

Great choice!
![]() 06/18/2014 at 23:32 |

I hate when they do that. All the buyer is doing is wasting time to have his money, annoying the costumer (in this cae you), and just urging you to hear that call,.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 23:33 |
|
THATS AWESOME! Seriously, I cant believe how good this thing would be wi the VR6, you have an photos/videos?
![]() 06/18/2014 at 23:34 |
|
Yeah, rigidity is on of the key traits of this convertible. Handling is solid
![]() 06/18/2014 at 23:39 |
|
Thanks a lot! Really usefull info, and I always wanted a VR6 from 2002 or so. I think it is one HELL of a sleeper, I mean, the ONLY way to know it has the 2.8 is the chromed badge at the back. I feared reliability, but forums are savior, and knowing the engine is strong gives me confidence to go out and buy one. In the future, I may import a damn nice one from the US.
Amazing build, and you seem to have great ability with swaps.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 23:40 |

I guess. Before taking the plunge you might want to ask someone who is more familiar with those.
![]() 06/19/2014 at 00:00 |

I dont think I would know anyone with experience since they were quite rare in Mexico. I plan on using forums and trusting my mecanic.

if I don't hear back this weekend I am buying a $1000 scirocco I found or a $600 rat rod.
